Tron Legacy (Movie Review)

Went to see Tron Legacy on Friday (Opening Day, ah geek in me).   I liked the first Tron.   The new Tron was done even better in the visual department

Here's the stuff I found most notable:

The visuals were top-notch. I really thought the "updated look" to the light cycles, and the ribbon trails they left behind them where done very well. The multiple cubes effect of people getting de-rezzed was amazingly good too. The traditional Walt Disney castle logo at the beginning of the movie was very cool with its Tron like look.

I never heard of Daft Punk until I heard the soundtrack in the movie and it seems to fit the theme of the movie.

There really wasn't much Tron in this Tron. He practically made a cameo appearance! Since he's many people's favorite character of the original, I thought he deserved a little more screen time.

Overall? I enjoyed/liked this movie (7.5 out of 10), and I think they did a good job of trying to respect the original, instead of stomping all over it, like SO often happens when they sequel a movie that was made so much earlier. In the end though? Given the original's whole premise, I'm not sure how this could have been re-made to have a fully believable story-line or deep plot/message? Much of the "magic" of the original Tron came from the fact that back in the 80's, computers were still a brand new and fascinating thing for a lot of us. As kids, we saw Tron and said "Wow.... that's a pretty cool way to imagine what the inside of a computer would be like if you could really become a part of one!"

Now, almost 30 years later? We've all progressed far past the extent of computer games being things as "basic" as a light-cycle or person vs. person battle with throwing discs, and computer have become as much of a commodity item as our washers or dryers. We've all seen plenty of movies covering more expansive concepts like the entire Internet (The Matrix, etc.), too. So in a sense, the magic has evaporated with time -- and the best they could do is try to give back a little with the visuals and some nostolgia.

Windows 7 32bit, Jessica Blue

To start with, a security unit built in a virtual drive under my Ubuntu 10.10 32bit install.   The total hard-drive partition size on my linux section of the machine is 300GB.

Of that, Jessica Blue will occupy 40GB of virtual hard-drive space and a allocated share 2GB of RAM.

Enough to run any simple security program.

Part of the idea of this exersize is to be virtually virus and trojan free with a responsible installation of Linux and run a virtual machine on top of that to add a layer of security.

I am giving a side by side comparison of Windows vs Linux vs Mac

To date, the 64 bit Windows 7 is down and can't even deal with Word suite 2007 (32bit).

My Christening of Alice, Mark II

I created a new sub-system, a windows 32bit virtual device, with 2GB of RAM and 40GB of harddrive space (I originally did 20GB but it got crowded fast).

The total available RAM for the actual machine is 4GB (slightly less for 32bit operating systems).   Which is why I have a Windows 7 64bit installed on its separate 250GB partition.

As far as bugs go, Ubuntu is suprizingly stable, there are a few quirks from the window rendering for the GUI, top three shrink/expand/exit are missing and I have to rebuild the package.

I have wine, the windows software emulator but am finding very little use for it with a VirtualBox with Windows 7, speed is the only thing that gives it any edge.

Watch out twtad.com and revtwt.com are scams

Ok, in the life I have lived around the computers. I can honestly say I have only been compromised twice and both times where my fault.

Password protocols are important and I have learned to keep my passwords as safe as I can. After an experience that shook me to the bone. My complacency with passwords was not really the issue (but shame on me for not changing them more frequently) so much as being too curious for my own good and not doing my due diligence.

I subscribed to a site twtad/revtwt (the one points to the other) and it jacked my Twitter account, my primary Google account ( as well as my twitter, linkedin and facebook). My bank and poker data where safe and only attached by way of a third party proxy.

I was thankful that the process did not allow for a bank draft into and out of my account. That would of been tempting due to the nature of the possibilitiess of a adsense like twitter, fortunately it did not and Paypal is a level removed from my primary bank accounts.

Too bad this was crooked as I could see a few possibilities with this business model.

But through quick thinking. I immediately executed password retrieval protocols, through question/answer pass-phrases to get back into Paypal and a text request to my cell phone to give me re-activation codes for Google to enable me to change my password.

I never really thought I would have my account compromised and the secession of my other connected accounts compromised as well. My only saving grace was this was done by a bot and not a active hacker, if some one was able to capture my username/password credentials for my account, log in and change my security question and change my emergency cell phone options to goto the evil hackers instead of me then that ID is pretty much fucked, I have and many others have attempted to get a live person at Google and they make it effectively impossible to do.

I am just glad I was able to save it.

This link was one Google search away and it would of tipped me off to twtad's legitimacy

and this link

Its a mixed bag of positive and negative and questionable comments.

Forwarned is for armed.

Ubuntu 101, Project "alice-Inspiron-519"

The name of my project is alice-Inspiron-519

I have been able to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a second partition of a Dell Inspiron, from a bootable CD with Ubuntu 10.10 ISO image.

This tool is important,   for any hacker agent.   The image should be put on a Compact Disk, not a DVD and not initially on a Universal Serial Bus thumb-drive.

The reason for this is that the Compact Disk is the lowest common denominator and offers the greatest possibility of accessing any given machine.   Some older computers may or may not have a Universal Serial Bus thumb-drive port available or is simply unable to boot from a Universal Serial Bus device since there is no option in the BIOS also know as the Basic Input Output System.   Other older units may only have Compact Disk drive and not Compact Disk/DVD combo drives

Project alice-Inspiron-519, is a simple proof of concept project, to build Uber systems, comparable to Windows 7 and Mac OSX, without the price tag.

Linux is a way of thinking as much as it is a Operating System.   In a real sense a hacker will have to learn to get the best use of the machine is to know how and why it works the way it does.

The Hackintosh Guide

Hackintosh computers are non-apple computers that run OSX.

Since I have always been a Linux guy, a Hackintosh was a logical leap for me.   Apple is solid in its art and design of its OSX.   Even their hardware is of good quality (but at a premium).

In short, you will be unable to get into a legitimate copy of OSX for under $1500.   Where as a good PC laptop is about $1000.

A good PC laptop (with an Intel chipset) is able to run Windows (of course), Linux and OSX.   You can triple partition and install all Operating Systems on the "metal" as it where.

Some interesting finds on the subject can be found here and here

Poker Streaks of Luck, Economics of Chance

It tight positions of a decreasing chip-stack, it is the immortal rule that you cannot control luck.   You may however manage your luck better by having solid play.

Poker has always had streaks of luck, that is, hands that ultimately win the pot (a suck-out) and hands that may win but is won out by a better winning hand (a bad-beat).

Every hand is a speculative opportunity, of the initial condition of your hand and the subsequent condition after the flop and your analysis of risk vs. reward.

If you have the certified nuts and the tells are telling you so.   Then go for it.

Risk tolerance and wise assessment of working capital (i.e. Bankroll).

Poker is a Zero sum game, so, play long enough and on average you will lose what you gained, leaving you with $0.

Some have suggested this is only applicable if you are playing with average players.   Obviously with weak fish, you are more inclined to gain.  With strong and tight players you are more inclined to lose.

Luck is the 1% rule of determination and fate.

iPad and iPhone Development

Tools you will need.

Like it or not you will need to acquire Apple hardware, to do this with Apple's blessing.   Now I know there are ways to develop for the iPad and iPhone.   I am aware of methods to produce the programming libraries to cross develop from Linux and Windows 7.
We will explore all techniques, beginning with

iPad
This is the test bed for your applications.   It can be anything Apple approves on if you want to distribute through the Apple Store.   If for some reason your application doesn't make the cut.   Fear not, you can still distribute your application manually and avoid Apples 30% tax on your virtual wares.

Macbook Pro

Make no mistake, this baby is worth its weight in gold.   The Macbook Pro is the way to go for iPad and iPhone development.   With the Intel chipset and superior hardware, the Macbook Pro offers a diverse platform that allows multiple Operating Systems.

Objective-C is the main language for the iPad and iPhone.   The portability of the Macbook Pro is undeniably the best reason to get one.

iMac
Now the iMac offers more CPU power at the cost of portability.   This may seem like a problem, losing portability is a big problem for the

road warrior/code warrior.

One advantage that the iMac offers is the best video editing platform bar none, its 27 inch monitor is full HD.

1,326 is where it all starts

1,326 possible starting hand combinations.

My Poker Math

The probability of being dealt various starting hands can be explicitly calculated. In Texas Hold 'em, a player is dealt two down (or hole or pocket) cards. The first card can be any one of 52 playing cards in the deck  and the second card can be any one of the 51 remaining cards. This gives 52 × 51 ÷ 2 = 1,326 possible starting hand combinations. (Since the order of the cards is not significant, the 2,652 permutations are divided by the 2 ways of ordering two cards.)

Of the 1,326 combinations, there are 169 distinct starting hands grouped into three shapes:

13 pocket pairs (paired hole cards), 13 × 12 ÷ 2 = 78 suited hands and 78 unsuited hands;  13 + 78 + 78 = 169.
The relative probability of being dealt a hand of each given shape is different.

Cash Game Managing Winnings (Pechenga)

$140
Went to Pechenga.   Bought $40 of chips from my Bankroll.

I was grinding for about two hours and hit maximum profit margin at $203, but cashed out with $140 after several bad beats.

My take home        $140
Payback Vault        -$44
Fuel                          -$10
Net Winnings:           $86

 $44 will go back to the Vault ($40 + $4 [10%]) for a running Vault total of ($106 + $44 = $150), Fuel to drive to casino ($96 - $10 = $86), I had enough comps for a nice meal food was free.

$86 earned capital.

1-2-3 Your Out

Pechenga
($3-$6 Limit)
Bankroll: $40
Net Won: $0
Time: 15 minutes
$-per-hour: -$40

Trade secrets on the table are held tight to your chest. With $40 I played a 3-6 hold'em game. I lasted 3 hands. I feel I played them correctly at first but meditated on my plays on the drive home.

My first hand was 5d, 6d the flop came (10d, Qs, 9d), some one raised, I called. (-$6; $34 chips), 4th street flopped a (3c) another raise, another call (-$12; $22 chips). 5th street (7h), I made a flush, another raise, another call (-$12;
$10 chips)

I knew the raiser had a flush, I feared the raiser had an Ace and X of hearts. The bad beat wiped out 75% of my chip stack.

The next hand, cost me (-$3; $7 chips), not to play.

The hand that killed me was (As, 3c), the flop was (Ah, 7c, 5d); I spiked my Ace, I bet (-$3; $4 chips), there was a raise (i went all in )(-$4, $0 chips) and was out gunned with (Ah, 8d), a better pair.

Analysis
$40 only gave me 3 plays, because of the outs I perceived with the flop.

What I did Right
I took advantage of my hand the best I could, I had one out for a straight flush (8h) and outs for a made flush of hearts. I was able to correctly assess that I was up against another heart flush.

What I did Wrong
When the (7h) dropped on the river, I knew I had no chance on a straight flush, even with the flush I had, I should of folded and save half my chip-stack.

Lesson Learned:
Bad beats (you have a winning hand but is beat by a better one) do give you the best experience than suck outs (you have the better hand)

Poker Face

Pechenga Poker $2/$4
Limmit
Bankroll: $40
---------------------------

I got there and it was a wait.

I scoped the players, no known faces. But a few recognizable faces among the employees of Pechanga.

I watched for about 20 minutes before a table of 9 players was formed.

It was a grind connecting pairs came left and right, along with suited cards, but I was catching none of it.

The only hands I won with modest size pots where, bluffs and split pots. I was grinded out despite playing my absolute best.

Analysis

$40 only gave me 6 rounds/cycles of blinds. I started at 100% dropped to 25% Bumped to 50% but was not catching cards and I was grinded.

What I did Right

Played only medium to good hands, along with suited connectors.

What I did Wrong

It was not my night. When I had to bluff just to win $20, half of my original chip stack slowly diminished after grinding away against the blinds. Should have walked away, to fight another day.

Lesson Learned:

Although there is officially no time to quit playing poker, virtually any two cards have even probability of being the best hand, even 3-7 off suite.

One needs to be at their sharpest at the tables. Your chips are soldiers in your war, each one, even the very last one, keeps you in play. With a chance to seize a pot.

Quit when you feel like you’re losing your edge.

Remember, poker is a 0 balance game. Play long enough, you will eventually lose all your gains*.
